Greatest Procedures and Ideas for Improving Your Home | Burberry ...

Deciding what to do next when improving your home will take work. Whilst it is a difficult task, it?s also very fun, and you should be excited about doing it because you are improving your home and its value. Your project could be something the whole family will appreciate such as a new addition. Perhaps you could do something like fixing a leak in your home to help boost your quality of life. Everything should be planned, right down to the very last detail, to make sure your project is a success, regardless of what you?re going to do. This is the smart approach because it can help prevent frustration and keep things going smoothly.

One of the worst possible outcomes after working on plumbing is a leak. Hopefully you do a good job with the plumbing, because having a leaky pipe is a pain. When you do the job correctly in the first place, it will save you a lot of aggravation. Before you start any plumbing job, make sure that you know what you are doing. If you use the wrong sealing materials, you will probably end up having leaks, and you don?t want that. As important as it is to save money on do-it-yourself projects, one place you shouldn?t save is by reusing plumbing parts. When rubber sealing pieces get old, they become hard and deformed, so they should be thrown away. Take your original parts to the local hardware store, and get parts that are exact fits.

No matter what it is, electrical grounds are needed for any electrical circuit. An abundant amount of abodes or structures? electrical grounds approach the earth ground. Therefore the worry becomes when the electrical machines in your residence are being replaced. First, only do it if you have a volt-ohm meter and can check for voltages and ohms, or continuity. Authenticate your ground location and whether or not they arrive at earth ground. Once you are finished, verify that everything is properly connected and going where it should be. An incorrect ground connection that introduces shock risks is not an introduction you want to make.

Assuming you are not a professional when it comes to electrical concepts and equipment, understand that all home improvement projects that contain home appliance additions have to be checked with carefulness. We are specifically referring to the specs for electrical loading. In order to be operable, everything that uses electricity necessitates a measurement of current. Therefore use caution that you don?t put in anything that goes over the power rating for safety for the circuit breakers in your dwelling. Hopefully the breakers work as they should and if the current draw is too high they cause opening. Still, should a problem arise and it doesn?t function properly, then a risk of fire is possible.

Making improvements on your home can truly be an enjoyable experience and you can enjoy them with members of your family. But always plan very carefully, know what you are doing, and be safe at all times.

Fellow Passengers: This week?s Promise Passage* (Genesis 6:1-4) transports me to the well-traveled lands of inter-species romance, a favorite trope of television and film. Some of my favorite mis-matched love connections include Mork and Mindy, Roger and Jessica Rabbit, Kermit and Miss Piggy, Shrek and Fiona, Jake Scully and Neytiri (although Avatar was a stinker of a movie in my humble opinion). But the series that must be in the Guiness Book for most inter-species romance has to be Star Trek and all its spin-offs. Captain Kirk always had an eye for other-worldy women, no matter what shade of green their skin happened to be. While Gene Roddenberry originally envisioned the show as a space western, an intergalactic Bonanza, it turned out to be much more like a stellar soap opera, with relationship dramas heightened by the cross-cultural difficulties of inter-species conflict. How the biology would work was a question rarely addressed. It seems to have worked for Spock?s parents, and Spock himself had a fling of his own with Uhura. Warf never seemed satisfied with Klingon women. Deana Troi?s Betazoid gift of reading emotions made her a good ship?s counselor, but she never seemed to be able to put the gift to good use in her various affairs of the heart across the great divide. Perhaps the most far-fetched of all these bold journeys into lands of unlikely liaisons where no one had gone before was Tasha Yar?s one night stand with the android, Commander Data.

Gene Roddenberry was certainly not the first to dramatize the difficulties of other-worldly relationships. The pre-history narratives of the beginning of creation give us the first script for the soap opera of mixed marriages, between the sons of God and the daughters of men. Some commentators have tried to explain away this fantastic drama, arguing that the sons of God refer to Seth?s offspring and the daughters of men refer to Cain?s offspring. I don?t buy that, because the biblical writers are fairly consistent in describing offspring of particular people by their names, and the phrase sons of God is consistently used to describe angelic beings. That other biblical traditions argued that angels are sex-less beings does not seem to have bothered these early story-tellers. Perhaps they were answering the age-old question, how did the first family of humans answer the call to be fruitful and multiply? Their answer is fascinating. The first family multiplied by going outside the family, outside the human family, and as a result giants were found tromping through the land (the offspring of the other-worldly mating). Also as a result, a flood came to destroy the earth. God was not pleased that the humans looked for love outside their world, that they were fruitful and multiplied with non-humans. It brought wickedness to the community, and God lost patience trying to strive with these less-than-human creatures. Enter Noah and the ark. Maybe it was named Enterprise B.

I think there?s a lesson in this tried and true trope of a story for us today, as we argue and fight over who should be able to marry. We seem content to allow any man and any woman to marry, no matter what ?worlds?, that is, what world systems, what core values, they adhere to. When a man and a woman meet in Vegas, get sloppy drunk and take a taxi over to the Chapel of Love to get hitched by an ordained Elvis impersonator, there are no questions asked about how much they share world views, core values, or beliefs. They are yoked together by the power vested by the State, no matter how unequal the yoking might prove, all because they have the ?right? plumbing. But if two sober human beings of the same gender, who happen to share the same core values of love, mutuality, respect, dignity, fidelity, and monogamy, who are ready to make a life-long commitment to one another before God, approach the courthouse in our state to get their license, they are treated as aliens, as if they have no human rights. Church leaders are right in saying the institution of marriage is at risk, but I think they have identified the wrong risk, the wrong threat.?It?s a threat of competing core values, not a biological threat. It is a harsh reality that the divorce rate and the rate of domestic violence is the same among Christian families as in non-Christian families. Regarding Christian marriage, we ought to be thinking a lot more about the threats occurring when we allow our culture?s values of violence and greed to be wed with Jesus? values of radical love and contentment. In terms of civil marriage, our society would do well to put its stamp of approval on any and all who share core values of commitment, fidelity, love, compassion, mutuality, and respect. If we have hearts large enough to be able to sit back and laugh and say nanoo nanoo with Mork and Mindy, it seems the least we can do is stand up and say God bless you to Kathryn and Elizabeth.

How about you? Where does this Promise Passage take you on your journey of faith? Feel free to comment, and share with friends on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, etc.

Jessica Biel on Justin Timberlake: Marriage Won't Change Anything

Jessica Biel is looking forward to her newest role: wife.

"To me, nothing will really change, because I'm almost never home," the Total Recall actress told Gala. "But when I am home, I enjoy cooking."

Overall, once they tie the knot (possibly in a big summer wedding), "I don't think our marriage will change anything," the 30-year-old says.

While that may turn out not to be true, she admits "it will be a challenge finding a balance between private life, family and work ... I'm ready."

Timberlake, Biel

Biel also describes herself as "someone who lets things happen naturally," saying she is not sure if she wants to have a child right away.

"For me, getting married doesn't mean limiting ourselves to some predefined idea. Rather, it's an opportunity to explore new things in life."

And while fans may ogle Timberlake's good looks and hot moves, for Biel, there are three distinct qualities she finds admirable in Justin.

"The ability to communicate well ... to be able to express his feelings," she says of her future husband. "Then, loyalty. And, finally, honesty."

These two are totally the next Will and Jada Smith.

NFL upholds salary cap reductions following Atlanta meeting

ATLANTA (AP) - An arbitrator has upheld the NFL's salary cap reductions on the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins for this season and next.?

The Redskins lost $36 million over two years, and the Cowboys lost $10 million for overloading contracts during the uncapped 2010 season despite league warnings about such maneuvering.

Also, the NFL is making thigh and knee pads mandatory equipment for the 2013 season, a move the players' union was not pleased with since it had no input in the decision.?

Atlanta Falcons president and competition committee chairman Rich McKay said at the owners meeting today that the league can make the decision unilaterally because it is a playing rule. However, a statement from the NFLPA said any change in working conditions is a collectively bargained issue.

Browns linebacker Scott Fujita says he didn't take part in the Saints bounty program when he was with New Orleans. In his first public comments since the bounty scandal broke, Fujita says he intent on clearing his name and protecting his image. Fujita was handed a three-game suspension by the NFL for his alleged involvement in the pay-for-hits scheme.

And Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson is the latest former player to sue the National Football League and seek compensation for head injuries. Dickerson is the lead plaintiff among 15 men named in the suit filed Monday in federal court in Houston.?

More than 1,000 former NFL players are suing the league, saying not enough was done to inform them about concussion dangers and not enough is done to take care of them today. The league has said any allegation it intentionally misled players is meritless.

Charlize Theron is 'very good with side nudity'

Franck Robichon / EPA

By Us Weekly

Yes, Charlize Theron had a good side.

When the Oscar-winning actress, 36, briefly stripped down for her role in "Snow White and the Huntsman," she had one rule: don't shoot her from the front or back. "I am very good with side nudity," Theron laughed during an MTV News interview. "I tend to find that's probably my best kind of nudity."

She added: "Back is a little too much back; I need an angle. I like angular nudity. I can do a small percentage of one side and the other."

PHOTOS: Charlize Theron's hottest looks ever

As the vain Queen Ravenna, Theron shot scenes where she would take baths in black and white goo. Though it helped her character maintain a youthful glow, Theron admitted the beauty routine wasn't as beneficial in real life.

Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth discuss the evil queen's role in "Snow White and the Huntsman.'

PHOTOS: Oscar-nominated actors, then and now

"I prefer the white goo because it was heated, and the black was not, and it was really, really f-cking cold," she told MTV News. "It stained -- it actually stained!"

The actress -- mom to son Jackson, 6 months -- joked that she's either "going to die a very slow death" or gain superpowers after being submerged in the mystery goo. "I can bend metal with my breath," she laughed. "I don't know where that came from."

"Snow White and the Huntsman" -- also starring Kristen Stewart, 22, and Chris Hemsworth, 28 -- is in theaters June 1.

Jordin Sparks Weight Loss: Health for life

gre02e86po2a Posted by gre02e86po2a on 22 hours ago

Fitness has become lately one of many most favored strategies of bodily schooling, having now many of the rights to claim the standing of mass sport. The word arises from English and it crossed about all linguistic barriers, remaining translated as ?physical shape?, ?physical state?, ?general physical training?, ?health state?, etcetera.

Deriving from gals human body making, which was dropping its popularity, fitness has lately turn out to be an official sports activity. Like a operation sports activity, health needs precise native traits, like several other competitional sport. Essentially the most crucial characteristics are: a balanced bone construction, ectomorf or mesomorf somatic variety, expertise, pace. For all those much less familiarized with contests in this sports activity, we mention that in ladies opposition you will find a few activities: evening gown, swimming fit as well as a floor gymnastics software.

Coming back to mass health, we have to specify that, to a terrific extent, its acceptance is because of its accessibility. At first, the methods employed in physical fitness ended up mostly adopted from human body developing, but then they started to differentiate progressively more from people on the other sporting activities. Therefore, we now have a specific system in physical fitness, using a good diversity of workouts.

Another benefit of fitness is the fact that the teaching programs might be personalised according to the opportunities and aims of each and every human being. Even so, there is certainly a relentless in every one of the packages, and that is the balanced improvement of no less than a few motion parameters: strength, resistance and mobility ? physical features which might be closely relevant for the health and fitness state that physical fitness consists of. This specification is essential, because it can make the main difference within the doping circumstances (in these conditions, the sportsman?s bodily shape is usually exceptional, whilst his health state is certainly not).

The teaching programs include things like an exceptionally various space of cardio and anaerobic workouts. The systems might be taken it doesn?t matter of age, so long as they?re finished below knowledgeable supervision and are properly assimilated. It?s possible and it truly is even recommended to change the training software programs every once in awhile so that you can prevent regimen and revive participants? fascination. The diet and the plan of rest and recovery are quite essential. Activity dietetics has formulated considerably these days and it?s now specialised according to distinctive sporting activities, so physical fitness has its personal dietary recommendations, meant to maintain bodily effort and recovery after schooling.

In physical fitness, bodily training is, as many as a specific level, a means of peace by itself. Even so, there are actually also other methods of recovery, like sauna, massage, reflexology, hydrotherapy, etcetera.

Besides the obvious advantages that the entire body has from fitness, the psychological outcomes on the coaching plans are outstanding and this style of bodily training can even have a prophylactic role in depression and psychological instability.

All of the advantages of typical follow of conditioning could be greatest recognized only through months and many years of uninterrupted physical exercise, when just about every new software supports the conviction that it is hugely necessary to train every single day.

gus - Early Treatment by a Physical Therapist Associated with ...

A new study published in Spine shows that early treatment by a physical therapist for low back pain (LBP), as compared to delayed treatment, was associated with reduced risk of subsequent health care utilization and lower overall health care costs.

Using a national database of employer-sponsored health plans, researchers examined a sample of 32,070 patients who were newly consulting a primary care physician for low back pain. Patients were identified and categorized based on their use of physical therapist services within 90 days of the consultation. Those who were referred to a physical therapist early (within 14 days of the consultation) showed a reduced risk of subsequent health care utilization and experienced lower overall health care costs than did those patients with delayed treatment by a physical therapist (within 15-90 days of consultation).

During an 18-month follow-up period, researchers found that early treatment by a physical therapist was associated with reduced risk of subsequent surgery, injections, physician visits, opioid use, and advanced imaging, along with a corresponding reduction in overall LBP-related medical costs relative to delayed treatment by a physical therapist. Total health care costs for patients receiving early care from a physical therapist were an average of $2,736.23 lower.

According to the study's lead author, Julie M. Fritz, PT, PhD, ATC, associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Utah and clinical outcomes research scientist at Intermountain Health care in Salt Lake City, "The value of referring patients to physical therapy who are newly consulting primary care physicians for low back pain likely depends on the timing of the referral and how patients adhere to physical therapy guidelines that recommend maintaining and improving activity levels." She added, "Despite the fact that primary care practice guidelines generally recommend delaying referral to a physical therapist for several weeks, we found that about half the patients receiving treatment from a physical therapist did so within two weeks, which is a practice that may be justified by emerging evidence."

Fritz explained that one possible reason for the link between early care by a physical therapist and positive outcomes may be that physical therapists can contribute to promoting a greater sense of self-reliance in managing LBP and confidence in a positive outcome. "If a physical therapist's treatment assists in developing self-efficacy, it is reasonable to expect it would have greater impact when implemented very early, before negative expectations have become reinforced and entrenched." Fritz added that early care administered by a physical therapist may offer an alternative to management strategies that can foster a sense of dependency in the patient, such as use of MRI or opioids.

The study found that patients using a PPO plan were more likely to receive early treatment from a physical therapist (53.4%) as compared with those using an HMO plan (44.7%). Also, the highest rates of physical therapist utilization were found in the Northeast and West. Patients in the Midwest were more likely to seek early treatment from a physical therapist (58.7%).

An April 20 study in Spine also supports the benefits of early physical therapy for low back pain. In this study, researchers found that patients who received physical therapy early (within 30 days) after an episode of acute low back pain had a lower risk of subsequent medical service usage (surgery or epidural steroid injections) than patients who received physical therapy later. In this study, authors analyzed a national sample of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' physician outpatient billing claims.

Currently 47 states and the District of Columbia allow some form of direct access to physical therapists for treatment/intervention, although some states impose restrictions if patients have not been referred by a physician.

Coauthors of the study were John D. Childs, PT, PhD, associate professor and director of research, US Army-Baylor University Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy, Ft Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX; Robert S. Wainner, PT, PhD, associate professor, Texas State University - San Marcos, San Marcos, TX, and Timothy W. Flynn, PT, PhD, distinguished professor, Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions.

The study was funded by grants from the Orthopedic and Private Practice Sections of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic and Manual Physical Therapists. Funds were also provided by a faculty grant from Texas State University.

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) represents more than 80,000 physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students of physical therapy nationwide. Saving A Relationship After Cheating ? Is It Possible ...

Cheating is usually the most usual reason behind a relationship?s failure. Love alone can never toss the relationship towards forever commitment. However, I am not telling that this is unnecessary. Of course, it is extremely essential in making a relationship survive. In matters of food, love in a relationship is the main dish. A buffet will never exist without it. This goes in the same way with every relationship. An affair can never last for weeks, months or even months in the absence of love. That?s impossible.

On the other hand, a relationship demands for understanding, commitment, honesty and loyalty. And speaking of loyalty, it can be seen that many relationships today failed because of dishonesty and cheating as aforementioned above. Cheating does not mean to say third party. Lying in order to patch up things instantaneously is a form cheating. I know that there is no need for an elaboration on this matter. I believe that you are mature enough to know what these are.

To tell you frankly, cheating can wreck even the strongest relationship on earth. The length of time that couples stay together is never a guarantee of survival against the turbulence of cheating?s consequences.

Let us get down deeper. In a relationship, couples must anticipate challenges along the way. Conflicts are very plausible to come to pass. These conflicts do not mean to say quarrel alone. There will come a time when your heart and mind might not agree with each other. You tend to demand for space. You tend to demand for something new. You might even find yourself fallen out of love. These are just few of the things that couple need to undertake.

The moment that you find yourself caught in this situation, you turn out to be more vulnerable to cheating your partner. And if you get drowned to this feeling without doing something to stop it, you will find your hands bleeding as you pick up the pieces of a shattered relationship. Do you know that this is happening in most cases?

Let me tell you. Cheating is becoming more enchanting and motivating especially among men. This time, I am referring to third parties in a relationship. I am calling the attention of most men in this matter. Yes, women do cheat. However, most men are considerably weaker than women in resisting the impulse and sexual attraction.

This is not to teach you how to say no to temptation, it?s your prerogative to do so. Nonetheless, this is to give you a heads up on the suggested and advisable things that you can do in?saving a relationship after cheating.

First things first.

Acceptance and persistence.

These are the two virtues that you need to grow in your hearts before making a move to win the love of your life back.

You committed something wrong that hurts your partner very terribly. Cheating him or her does not stop in causing him or her pain alone. As you do so, you stepped into his or her pride. Your actions push your partner in the thought of futility and insult. Therefore, you need to put yourself in his or her shoe before employing any strategy in getting him or her back.

Accept that you are faulty. Accept that you are the one who made the ship sink in the ocean of devastation. Accept the blame. This time, let me point a finger on you as the one who wrecked a seem- to- be perfect relationship. But there is one thing that you should know. It?s never too late to save the ship from total collapse.

How? Read on.

We mentioned about acceptance. Persistence ought to follow it up. Knowing that you had brought too much aching in the relationship, you need to wait for the perfect time to put everything in proper order. Wait for your partner?s readiness to listen to your plea.? Have the patience to wait for your partner?s willingness to open his or her door for a second chance in love.

But let me tell you another thing fellow. This is tougher than you thought. You might face rejection, humiliation and slashing words of insult. But, have faith and the confidence to persist your good intention of bringing the most precious thing in your life- love.

Good luck!

Business Travel and Your Image

Appearance at trade shows and when employees travel for business, representing the company, is covered by a dress code in most companies. Suits are de rigueur in business meetings and many companies supply polo shirts or cotton button downs with the company logo for people who work the sales booth at a show.

For several employees I've encountered over the years, personal expression was more important than the company's professional appearance requirement. This didn't fly in any case when the employee's responsibility was customer contact and service and they were the front line representing the company.

I chalk up their need for long hair; bushy beards; wrinkled, torn clothes; and / or visible, multiple piercings and tattoos as a sign of immaturity. Making a point that was so unnecessary as to be silly?

Whatever their reason, and I'm sure the reason was important to the employee at the time, their demand to represent the company in this attire, was turned down. In each case, the employee had the opportunity to continue to work for and represent the company, but in other ways. They were no longer welcome to play the role of the in-person face of the company to customers. In fact, company guidelines specify trade show attire.

Employees who travel on business trips frequently, and especially for longer periods of time, need ideas for packing clothing so that they look like professionals upon their arrival. They also don't want to weigh themselves down to exhaustion with more than they need and will use. With this thought, I came across a New York Times article about packing that made great points about?how travel pros pack. Have you considered rolling your clothes?

That article took me to a travel blog, Another Flight Attendant Writing, written by flight attendant Heather Poole. Worth a read, she dishes and disses about her travel experiences. And, who would be a better judge of the 10 dark, dirty secrets of hotels, or recommended types of crew luggage, for example? You'll find lots of travel links from these worthwhile pieces, too.

New-paradigm globalisation and networked FDI: Evidence from Japan

International trade theory is going through another revolution ? the third in three decades. The first came in the 1980s ( ?new trade theory?) when Paul Krugman, Elhanan Helpman, Victor Norman, Tony Venables and Jim Brander opened the black box of the production possibility frontier. They allow for firms and increasing returns to scale; this massively extended the real-world relevance of trade theory.

The second revolution (?new new trade theory?) came when Marc Melitz (2003) opened the black box further by allowing for firm-level productivity differences. Antr?s (2003) contributed to this by opening up the black box of firm organisation. Again, these developments tremendously boosted the ability of theory to address important aspects of reality.
More recently, a new theoretical innovation (dare one call it new-trade cubed?) did it once again. The new perspective ? sometimes called new-paradigm globalisation ? opens up the black box of production function, allowing for potentially internationalised supply chains. While this perspective goes way back, a recent rash of theory and empirical work shows that this ?new-paradigm globalisation? has incredibly important implications for policy and empirics.1

A few years ago, one of us argued that the big difference between old and new paradigm globalisation was the driving force (Baldwin 2006). Old-paradigm globalisation focuses on lower trade costs; the new paradigm focuses on coordination costs ? the information and communication technology (ICT) revolution in particular. Lower coordination costs made it feasible to geographically unbundle production stages and wage differences made it profitable. This ?second unbundling? transformed international commerce as the sorts of flows that used to be contained inside factories now became international. Many US-based scholars have focused on wage implications most notably Grossman and Rossi-Hansberg (2008). But the second unbundling ? variously known as offshoring, vertical specialisation, fragmentation, etc. ? has many other implications for empirical work and policy making.

In a recent paper, we turn the new-paradigm focus to FDI theory (Baldwin and Okubo 2012). Canonical thinking about FDI distinguishes two main types: horizontal and vertical (Markusen 1984 and Helpman 1984).

  • Horizontal FDI in the former is said to be ?market seeking?;
  • Vertical FDI is ?efficiency seeking?.

Empirical tests typically search for FDI motives by considering whether FDI activity is greatest between large nations (market seeking), or nations with big endowment and/or factor prices differences (efficiency seeking) (Carr et al. 2001, Blonigen et al. 2003). The two have been synthesised and enriched to include export platform FDI (Markusen and Venables 2000, Yeaple 2003, Ekholm et al. 2007). Grossman, Helpman and Szeidle (2006) generalise these results by allowing a richer range of multinational activities that can be called complex FDI.

Our paper contributes to this by using firm-level data on the sales and sourcing patterns of Japanese affiliates in all industries in all nations to suggests that very little FDI falls neatly into any of the standard bins, i.e. horizontal, vertical or export platform. We find that most affiliates are buying some, but not all, of their intermediates from abroad and selling some, but not all of their output abroad. We refer to this FDI as ?networked FDI? since the evidence is that these affiliates are operating as nodes in regional production networks. Moreover, we show that this aspect of the data became much stronger from 1996 to 2005.

We suggest that a very natural way to test FDI theories is to use the sales and sourcing patterns of affiliates. We also argue that the location and nature of FDI activity depends upon third-country effects of two types ? basically the international equivalent of backward and forward linkages. The first, forward linkages, suggests that FDI production is favoured by locations near many large markets ? perhaps measured by some sort of market potential index for the host nation (Baltagi et al. 2005). The second, backward linkages, suggest that FDI production is favoured by proximity to masses of similar activity in both the host nation and nearby nations. This might be measured by some sort of host-nation-specific price index for intermediates and they have not, to our knowledge, been explored empirically or theoretically.

Taken together, the two third-nation effects suggest that the location and nature of FDI activity is influenced by something that might be called ?regional comparative advantage?. For example, even if Cambodia and Uganda had identical national policies, endowments, and market size, Cambodia?s proximity to massive manufacturing activity creates backward and forward linkages that make FDI more attractive in Cambodia than in Uganda. The policy implications of these observations are clear. Policies that worked in East Asia must be rethought before applying them to very different regions such as Latin America, Central Asia, and Africa.

New-paradigm globalisation suggests that we view FDI as part of the second unbundling. This, in turn, suggests a perspective that focuses on each affiliate?s sales and sourcing pattern (Figure 1). The existing classifications are corner solutions: Pure horizontal FDI is the northeast corner; pure vertical FDI is the eastern border; pure export platform FDI is the southwest corner.

Figure 1. The sales-sourcing box diagram

Using an aggregated version of Japan?s firm-level data, we plot the Japanese affiliates in the sales-sourcing box diagram (sub-sector averages). We do this for 1996 (Figure 2) and 2005 (Figure 3). Plainly, three categories can?t cover the full range of reality.

Figure 2. Sales and sourcing by sector, 1996

As production unbundling advanced, the sales-sourcing pattern of Japanese FDI changes dramatically, as the comparison between 1996 and 2005 shows. Although the sector classifications changed between the two years, the broad picture is clear ? most sectors saw a decrease in the local sourcing of intermediates.

Figure 3. Sales and sourcing Japanese affiliates, all host nations, 2005

In particular, Figure 3 shows the emergence of what we called ?networked FDI? ? i.e. FDI where the affiliates import substantial shares of their intermediates and export substantial shares of their output. In this sense, trade and investment became far more entwined between 1996 and 2005. Figure 4 ? taken from the recent METI White Paper (2012) ? shows the evolution over time for three important sectors.

Figure 4. Evolution of sales and sourcing in Asian affiliates

Of course, this is a very rough classification and many nuances are hidden by this presentation, but it does serve to illustrate the point ? first made by Hanson et al. (2001) ? that the standard horizontal or vertical thinking is inadequate for understanding the behaviour of FDI.

In our paper, we find large regional variations among the three major host regions ? Asia, North America and the EU. The North American sales-sourcing patterns are strikingly different in terms of the dominance of local sales.

The dominance on the theory side of North-American inspired modelling and on the empirical side by US multinationals data has resulted in a belief that FDI is mostly motivated by ?horizontal? or market-seeking goals. Our research suggests that this is almost exactly wrong in the Japanese data.

Our divergent conclusions stem from two key differences. First, we note that the standard view is based on a rather indirect empirical strategy when it comes to testing FDI theories. Most papers seek to determine whether FDI activity (typically affiliate sales) are stimulated by market-seeking motives (horizontal) or efficiency-seeking motives (vertical), or a combination of the two (complex FDI) using macro data (GDP, endowments, etc) not micro data. We suggest that a very literal reading of the theory points to a very different empirical levers for distinguishing horizontal and vertical FDI, namely the sales and sourcing patterns of affiliates. We argue that affiliates? purchases of non-local intermediate goods (despite positive trade costs) indicates that it is cheaper to undertake some but not all production stages in the host nation. Likewise, exports back to the home country despite trade costs suggest that separating manufacturing stages lowers the cost of production. Likewise, the share of affiliate sales to the local market are perhaps the most natural indicator of horizontal FDI, with pure horizontal FDI requiring 100% local sales.

Using these levers, we find three key findings.

  • FDI in almost all sectors and almost all nations involves some ?vertical-ness?, and some ?horizontal-ness?.
  • In many nations and many sectors, the Japanese affiliates have sales and sourcing patterns that suggest that individual affiliates are part of a production network.

This ?networked FDI? may be a very interesting phenomenon to study from a theory, empirical and policy point of view since it suggests that ?regional comparative advantage? (basically third-nation effects on the supply and demand sides) may be an important consideration in crafting and evaluating national FDI policies.

  • Our data systematically show affiliates in North American have quite different sales-sourcing patterns compared to those in Asia and Europe.

Specifically affiliates in North American have sales-sourcing patterns that are far more in line with horizontal FDI than those in Asia and Europe. This suggests that strong conclusions from US data may have to be tempered before they are applied to the rest of the world ? especially developing nations.

LOUIE GIGLIO TO PREACH AT JOEL OSTEEN?S LAKEWOOD CHURCH

By?Christian Research Network?Associate Editor Erin Benziger of Do Not Be Surprised?
This is a repost of an original article on Do Not Be Surprised?

America?s largest and fastest growing ?church,? Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, often finds itself with guest speakers in the pulpit. With pastors Joel and Victoria Osteen traveling often for their own ?Night of Hope? events, or for other special speaking engagements, it must be helpful to know so many prominent pastors and speakers who would willingly substitute on any given weekend.

On the weekend of 26?27 May, Lakewood Church will welcome Louie Giglio to the stage. In fact, Victoria Osteen excitedly invited all of her Houston-based Twitter followers to visit the Lakewood venue for the occasion:

A quick visit to the website of Lakewood Church confirms this speaking schedule:

Louie Giglio is the pastor of Passion City Church in Atlanta. He is also the founder of the Passion Conference. Back in January, a strange thing occurred at Session 5 of the 2012 Passion Conference event. As was reportedon this blog at that time, speakers Louie Giglio, Beth Moore, John Piper and others engaged in a Scripture reading exercise followed by a time of silence and meditation while the audience of young people was instructed to ?be still? as they waited to ?hear? from Jesus.

Here is Beth Moore leading her portion:

And John Piper:

Finally, to close the session, Passion founder Louie Giglio stood and declared the following:

How many of you heard the voice of God speak specifically, clearly, directly, and personally, to you? Can you just put a hand up? I?d like you to share it. Can you put a hand up for a minute?

Just want you to look around; that?s people saying, ?God Almighty (pause) the Maker of heaven (pause) the one Who?s sitting on the only throne (pause) that?s not under threat (long pause, audience cheers)? He spoke to me. He spoke to me.?

?God spoke to me.? (long pause) Don?t let the voice of the darkness, tell you that you are not (pause) worth (pause) that God would not speak to you. (pause) Don?t let him tell you, you don?t matter. (pause) God spoke to you.

This exercise can perhaps best be described as ?Lectio Divina lite.? When did Protestant leaders begin to teach that we have the Bible ?plus? anything? God has spoken perfectly in His Word. We have no need to be still and wait for His voice.

It is curious, then, that Giglio, the founder and leader of the Passion event, would also be preaching at the one of the largest Word Faith churches in the country. But then, mysticism and the false, heretical prosperity gospel are both fruits plucked from the same bad tree.

EU takes action against Argentina at WTO

(AP) ? The European Union on Friday started legal proceedings at the World Trade Organization against Argentina, claiming the South American country stifles imports to protect its own industry.

The EU, the world's largest trading bloc, said that Argentina's recent move to seize control of a division of Spanish energy company Repsol was indicative of the worsening business climate in the country that has been seeking to limit foreign imports for the past 7 years.

EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said the situation in Argentina is "clearly getting worse" by the month, leaving him "no choice but to challenge Argentina's protectionist import regime."

And even though the EU started actions on its own, it said its complaints were shared by at least 19 other nations, including the United States, Japan and Australia.

"Europe is not a lone voice, Europe is not the only one," De Gucht said, and urged others to come on board with their own complaints.

"I would certainly welcome any of our trade partners joining our WTO action in coming days and weeks," he said.

The EU alleges that Argentina insists on pre-approval of all imports, systematically delays them and has policies to refuse or limit import amounts.

"Argentina's import restrictions violate international trade rules and must be removed. These measures are causing very real damage," De Gucht told reporters.

The EU trade department said that the Argentine restrictions already affected exports worth some ?500 million ($628 million) last year and that total was rising fast this year. Overall, EU exports to Argentina amounted to ?8.3 billion ($10.4 billion) last year.

Under the WTO rules, the EU and Argentina first will consult each other to settle their differences but if no bilateral deal is reached then, the 27-nation bloc can demand that WTO rules on the legality of Argentina's practices. At the end of a drawn-out process, the WTO can impose potentially crippling fines.

Beyond the current complaints, the EU said it was continuing to monitor the Repsol case for the latest developments.

"It was perhaps the most visible protectionist action by Argentina making headlines across the world but dig a little bit deeper and what you find is that Argentina's trade policy has become rooted in unfair trade practices," De Gucht said.

Repsol last week has sued Argentina over its takeover of the company's majority stake in the YPF oil and gas producer. Repsol and the investment firm Texas Yale Capital Corp. demand that Argentina makes an offer for the stake that Repsol held in YPF. The two want compensation for money lost when shares of Repsol and YPF plummeted after the takeover announced last month.

More Americans paying their car loans on time

Female car buyer signing documents at dealership

Nearly everyone in America with a car loan is making the payment on time, the Detroit Free Press is reporting.

A scant .36 percent of people with a car loan are 60 or more days behind on making their payment, according to a TransUnion report looking at the January through March quarter of auto loan payments. That means more than 99-percent of customers borrowing cash for cars are on time.

The tiny percentage, which represents a drop of about 27 percent year-over-year is the lowest since TransUnion started tracking it in 1999.

The fall in loan delinquency, however, may not be great news for banks overall. TransUnion attributes some of the on-time payments to recession weary consumers placing a priority on their car payment while foregoing payments on credit cards and underwater homes.

Los Angeles detectives seeking the material are merely practicing due diligence after receiving a tip that the recordings and other items in the estate of now-deceased lawyer Bill Boyd, who once represented Charles "Tex" Watson, were becoming available, LAPD spokesman Andrew Smith said.

"This whole thing has gotten totally blown out of proportion," Smith said, commenting on a report that first appeared on KNBC-TV.

Homicide detective Dan Jenks and Lt. Yana Horvatich, who made the request, have no specific information on what might be in the recordings, but they want to examine them, Smith said.

In their letter, they said they believed Watson discussed unsolved murders with his lawyer.

The audio recordings were previously made available by Watson to the co-author of his book, "Will You Die for Me? The Man Who Killed for Charles Manson Tells His Own Story." The book contains no information on unsolved murders.

The book features gruesome, detailed account of Watson's role in the killings of actress Sharon Tate and six other people. It also discusses Manson's murderous plans for those killings and includes sections on the formation of the Manson Family cult, Watson's family history in Texas, and his complete devotion to Manson.

He said he agreed to murder for Manson without question and felt no remorse afterward. He also noted that he was under the influence of LSD during most of the time he was with Manson.

Boyd, a lawyer hired to represent Watson by his parents, conducted a long fight to prevent his extradition to California from Texas, where Watson went after the murders.

By the time Watson arrived, he was not speaking and was ruled to be insane. He was committed to a mental institution for a year before he was found fit to stand trial separately from Manson and three women followers.

Watson, now 65, was convicted of the seven murders. All four defendants were sentenced to death but saw their sentences commuted to life when the death penalty was briefly outlawed in 1972.

Testimony at the Manson trial cast Watson as Manson's chief lieutenant, the cruel killer who confronted the pregnant Tate and her friends and announced, "'I'm the devil and I'm here to do the devil's work."

Police requested about eight hours of recordings of Boyd and' Watson that were made when Watson returned to Texas after the killings, according to KNBC-TV. The request was made in a letter dated March 19 and was included in a U.S. bankruptcy filing involving Boyd's law firm in Texas, the station said.

"The LAPD has information that Mr. Watson discussed additional unsolved murders committed by followers of Charles Manson," said the letter written to a bankruptcy court trustee in Tyler, Texas. "It is requested that the original recordings be given to the LAPD in order to determine if information regarding unsolved murders was included in the recordings."

A hearing on the request is scheduled Tuesday in Texas. Smith said Los Angeles detectives will not be attending the hearing.

"They've made the request," he said. "If it is granted, they will examine the materials."

KNBC says the audio remained private until Watson authorized its sale to his co-author to help cover unpaid legal fees.

In November, Watson was denied parole from for the 16th time and ordered to continue serving his life sentence. He married and divorced in prison and has four children from conjugal visits.
