Animated video shows Orion spacecraft in orbit

NASA may have pushed back the Orion spacecraft's test flight to 2014, but you can get an early glimpse of the capsule in orbit thanks to this animated video from Full Werks studio. You'll see the capsule circle the planet before touching down in the Pacific -- all with a much better view than you can expect when that actual launch date rolls around. The animation features audio clips from the original Apollo and, as any NASA-related video worth its salt should, includes a vintage voiceover from space sage Carl Sagan.

Usher Dead? No, Just Shirtless

Usher is NOT dead, despite Twitter reports to the contrary.

The star is alive and well ... and really ripped, apparently!

The R&B sensation became the latest "victim" of the lame and morbid trend of creating fake celebrity death stories and watching the rumors spread like wildfire online.

Way to go, hoax starters and people re-tweeting them! You really proved your point, or something! Anyway, Usher quickly assured us there's no need to worry:

Usher Shirtless Photo

"I must've died and went to heaven... Alive and cold kickin ass!!" he tweeted, along with a photo showing off his shirtless, buff bod, adding: "Livin' Legend!"

Now that's how you refute a death hoax.

3 Keys for a Service-Driven Small Business

by John Grey on April 11, 2012

Service-driven small businesses need to operate differently then manufacturers or retail businesses.? The small business marketing strategy for a service company should revolve around three core ideas.? Without these three ideas, your service-driven business will not be sustainable.? With these three ideas, your marketing strategies and tactics will then be effective, assuming you have the right strategies and tactics.? Before implementing any marketing strategy, you must uphold these three ideas, no matter what.

Responsiveness: Everybody dreads an unresponsive business owner and no body wants to hire a business with unresponsive employees.? As a small business owner, you must respond to all inquiries, questions, proposals, etc. ASAP.? Putting off a response by a day could kill a potential deal or deter future clients.? Furthermore, unresponsiveness tarnishes your brand due to negative word of mouth.? And do not forget about social media ? ratings and reviews can be posted instantly and will forever be attached to your brand.

Flexibility:? Although a scope of work or a contract might already be drafted and signed, unforeseen addendums might occur.? Be open to adaptations based on new revelations that your client discovers as the partnership develops.? Always be open to addending original contracts or scopes of work.

Transparency: No one wants to work with or hire a shady business.? Assume that everyone you encounter can discern even the slightest hint of? non-transparency.? By being open and honest with everyone you encounter, you will not only be developing the trust of clients and partners, but also you will be developing relationships that might lead to more business.

Kofi Annan seeks Iran's help in Syria crisis

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Special envoy Kofi Annan said Wednesday in Tehran that Iran could help solve the crisis in Syria, where activists reported fresh violence near the capital Damascus a day before an international cease-fire is supposed to take effect.

Iran is one of Syria's strongest allies, and former U.N. chief Annan went there to bolster support for his faltering plan to stop the country's slide toward civil war.

"Iran, given its special relations with Syria, can be part of the solution," Annan said during a news conference with Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi. "The geopolitical location of Syria is such that any miscalculation and error can have unimaginable consequences."

The conflict in Syria is among the most explosive of the Arab Spring, in part because of the country's allegiances to powerful forces including Lebanon's Hezbollah and Shiite powerhouse Iran. The uprising that began more than a year ago seeks the ouster of authoritarian President Bashar Assad.

Iran has opposed any foreign intervention in the crisis and Salehi insisted that "change in Syria" should come under the leadership of Assad.

Syria's regime defied the Tuesday deadline to pull out troops from cities and towns that was set in the deal brokered by Annan and launched fresh attacks on rebellious areas.

But Annan insists there is still time to salvage the truce by 6 a.m. Thursday, the deadline for government and rebel fighters to cease all hostilities.

"We've been in touch with them (Syrian rebels) and have had positive answers from them. ... I think by 6 in the morning on the 12th, Thursday, we should see a much improved situation on the ground," Annan said.

"It is possible to do it and it should be in the interests of the people of Syria," he added.

Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay, who met Annan on Tuesday, said the international envoy "appeared worried to me." Atalay told Turkey's TV 24 channel that the Syrian regime is not fulfilling its promise and while withdrawing its forces from one area, it is deploying them in an another.

He added that if Annan's plan does not succeed in ending the violence in Syria, "the world will rethink. This time, the U.N. Security Council will have no excuses. It will be more difficult to use their veto right." He was referring to Russian and Chinese vetoes of two past Security Council resolutions condemning Assad's regime for the crackdown on protesters.

There was more violence on Wednesday, putting the chances of a truce even deeper in doubt. Syrian troops took control of large parts of villages and towns near the border with Turkey.

Syrian state-run news agency SANA said gunmen shot and killed army Brig. Gen. Jamal Khaled in the Damascus suburb of Aqraba on Wednesday morning. It added that Khaled's driver, a soldier, was also killed in the attack.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights activist group reported clashes in the Barada Valley region on the outskirts of Damascus between troops and army defectors as government forces stormed the area. The Observatory said dozens of people were wounded.

Activist Fares Mohammed said two people were killed and dozens wounded when government troops stormed and shelled Barada valley as well as damaging tens of homes.

"Many of the wounded lost limbs as a result of shelling by tanks," he said.

The Local Coordination Committees, an activist network, reported shelling of several rebel-held neighborhoods in the central city of Homs.

The Observatory said "tens of army vehicles" are deploying in the southern town of Maaraba. The Observatory added that two people were killed in the eastern town of Qoriah during raids by regime force.

Activist Mohammed Abu Nasr said Syrian forces entered the border town of Azaz, about two miles (three kilometers) from the Turkish border and set homes of activists on fire.

In a letter to the U.N. Security Council, obtained by The Associated Press, Annan said Tuesday that Syria has not pulled troops and heavy military equipment out of cities and towns, and that the regime's last-minute conditions put the entire cease-fire at risk.

The council strongly backed Annan, with all 15 members ? including Syrian allies China and Russia ? approving a media statement expressing "deep concern" at the failure by Damascus to withdraw its troops and heavy equipment.

Rick Santorum Suspends Republican Presidential Campaign

'Against all odds we won 11 states,' Santorum said on Tuesday (April 10).
By Gil Kaufman

After an improbable run that boosted him from a barely-considered fringe candidate a year ago to the last man standing to rival Mitt Romney
for the Republican presidential nomination, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum announced he was suspending his campaign on Tuesday (April 10).

"We made the decision to get into this race at our kitchen table against all the odds and we made a decision over the weekend that while this presidential race for us is over, for me, and we will suspend our campaign effective today, we are not done fighting," he said.

The 12-minute afternoon press conference in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania featured Santorum surrounded by his family and backed by a flag as he re-iterated many of the themes of his campaign: the rebirth of American manufacturing, reforming Washington and a return to conservative values. "Against all odds we won 11 states, millions of voters, millions of votes," he said. "We won more counties than all the other people in this race combined."

With his emphasis on American manufacturing front-and-center to the end, Santorum even joked about his now-infamous sweater vests, noting that he sourced them from an American company, Minnesota's Bemidji Woolen Mills.

The suspension removed the last major obstacle to Romney's bid to become the uncontested front-runner in the race, paving the way for him to focus full-time on attacking President Obama. Santorum had positioned himself as the only true conservative left in the GOP field, sitting way behind the pack for much of 2011 as a wide field of other candidates, and would-be candidates, rose and fell before him, including Donald Trump, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry.

In late 2011, he caught fire unexpectedly, though, narrowly winning the Iowa caucus
(after the fact), then winning 10 more states along the way, despite being vastly outspent and outmanned by Romney at every stop.

The press conference came a day after three-year-old daughter Isabella was released from the hospital following her latest health scare, which took place on Friday and kept the family by her side all of Easter weekend. Bella suffers from the genetic condition Trisomy 18 and her hospitalization resulted in Santorum canceling his campaign events on Monday and Tuesday and speculation that he might be considering a suspension of his efforts.

Romney released a statement praising his one-time foe, saying, "Senator Santorum is an able and worthy competitor, and I congratulate him on the campaign he ran. He has proven himself to be an important voice in our party and in the nation. We both recognize that what is most important is putting the failures of the last three years behind us and setting America back on the path to prosperity." Though the men traded harsh barbs during the campaign, it is expected that Santorum will fall in line and throw his support behind Romney in a bid to deny Obama a second term.

With polls showing that he was on track to possibly lose in the April 24 primary in his home state of Pennsylvania — which would have been embarrassing and possibly hurtful to his political future — Santorum's exit leaves Romney with just two remaining challengers. At press time neither Gingrich nor Congressman Ron Paul appears to present much of a threat, as they are far behind in the delegate count and in fundraising. Gingrich, who has won two primaries, conceded over the weekend that Romney is "far and away the most likely" nominee; libertarian Paul has yet to win a primary.

Like Santorum, Romney still faces a serious gap with Obama when it comes to young voters (18-29), 22 million of whom voted in 2008. According to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE), Santorum was trailing among that demographic up until Super Tuesday, when his wins in the Alabama and Mississippi primaries helped vault him beyond youth-magnet Ron Paul. Even with that victory, though, Santorum still trailed Romney in terms of the overall youth vote count. Through Super Tuesday, the cumulative 2008 Democratic youth vote exceeded both the 2008 and 2012 count for the GOP, a figure that could prove important down the road for Romney.

Current estimates have Romney with 645 of the 1,144 delegates needed to win the nomination, with Santorum well behind at 252, Gingrich with 128 and Paul with 45. Romney still needs to reach the 1,144 figure to lock down the nomination, in addition to winning over the many still-unconvinced voters in the party's conservative base.

A Washington Post/ABC News poll released on Tuesday had Romney trailing Obama in a head-to-head race by a 51 to 44 percent margin.

Canada Defends Seal Hunt Quota As Population Hits All-time High

Published: March. 30, 2012 at 3:57 PM

OTTAWA, March 30 (UPI) -- A top official in Canada's federal fisheries department defended this year's seal quota against charges the seal herd can't support a harvest at that level.

Critics of the seal hunt say setting the annual harp seal quota at 400,000 animals is excessive, Canadian Broadcasting Corp. News reported Friday.

In response, Fisheries and Oceans Canada Director General of Resource Management Morley Knight said this year's quota is only slightly higher than annual quotas for the past decade.

Harp seal population is at an all-time high at about 8 million animals, he said.

Industry experts say the fight over the quota may mean little since falling demand caused by European import bans meant only 10 percent of last year's 400,000-seal quota were killed.

Novel compound demonstrates anti-leukemic effect in zebrafish, shows promise for human treatment

Novel compound demonstrates anti-leukemic effect in zebrafish, shows promise for human treatment [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 9-Apr-2012

American Society of Hematology

(WASHINGTON, April 9, 2012) A novel anti-leukemia compound with little toxicity successfully treated zebrafish with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL), suggesting its potential to become a new highly targeted therapy for humans even those resistant to conventional therapies according to results from a study published online today in Blood, the Journal of the American Society of Hematology (ASH).

T-ALL is a cancer of the white blood cells in which genetic mutations cause normal immature T-cells to develop into leukemic cells, or "blasts." These blasts then quickly build up and crowd out normal cells, spreading into the bloodstream and other areas of the body and creating life-threatening symptoms, including excessive bleeding and frequent infections.

Despite major advances made in leukemia treatment particularly multi-agent chemotherapy over the last 50 years, chemotherapy remains highly toxic because it attacks both cancerous and normal cells. In addition, patients with T-ALL who relapse typically have a very poor prognosis, underscoring the need for more targeted therapies to combat the high toxicity and mortality associated with current T-ALL treatment.

Because normal immature T-cells and T-ALL blasts share common development and cell activation pathways, Nikolaus Trede, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and investigator at the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah, and colleagues hypothesized that T-ALL treatments that specifically eliminate one may also target the other. To test their hypothesis, Dr. Trede's team turned to an entirely different species zebrafish to identify a compound that could pack an anti-leukemic punch.

"Zebrafish serve as an excellent model for many cancers, including leukemia, because the zebrafish and human genomes and immune systems share many similarities, making them easy targets for genetic modification to mimic human cancers," said Dr. Trede, the study's senior author.

Dr. Trede's team used a line of zebrafish they had previously created, in which immature T-cells were fluorescently labeled so they effectively "glowed" when present, to help identify whether any test compound eliminated those cells while ensuring that they did not affect any other cell types or compromise the overall health of the fish. They screened 26,400 molecules and identified the novel molecular compound Lenaldekar (LDK) as effective in eliminating immature zebrafish T-cells and targeting human T-ALL cell lines without causing major toxicity to other cell types.

After confirming LDK's effectiveness in vitro, the investigators then tested its efficacy in zebrafish and mouse models of human T-ALL. After a 14-day treatment period, researchers found that more than 60 percent of all zebrafish treated with LDK maintained long-term remission (more than nine months), while 100 percent of zebrafish treated with the control died by day 40. Similarly, in the mouse model, treatment with LDK significantly slowed disease progression without toxicity.

The team then examined LDK's effectiveness in treating cells taken directly from patients with other leukemias, namely chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and B-cell ALL (B-ALL), including those resistant to current therapies. After testing a number of patient samples, researchers found that LDK was active against the vast majority of primary leukemia samples, demonstrating its effectiveness beyond T-ALL.

In addition to demonstrating LDK's efficacy, investigators also discovered that the compound works differently from current leukemia treatments because it inhibits both an important signaling pathway that promotes the survival of leukemia cells and a pathway that controls the cell division process, disrupting the proliferation of leukemic cells and, in essence, leading to their self-induced death. Because of this unusual combination of effects, this study positions LDK as a more selective, less-toxic option than current therapies.

"This is the first successful approach using zebrafish larvae to identify molecules with potency against leukemia from a small molecular library containing compounds with unknown activity," said Dr. Trede. "We are encouraged by LDK's path from a virtual unknown to a potential powerhouse against leukemia, and we are working on discovery of LDK's cellular target, which may ultimately help convert the compound into a drug that can be used in patients with leukemia."

Green Valley Nevada Real Estate: Green Real Estate Case Study ...

As the founder for a think tank which happens to operate online, I generally have the final say in who gets to join, and who doesn't. I've been rather alarmed in recent years by the number of folks attempting to join who had taken environmentalism almost as some sort of religion without having all their facts straight. Further, far too many of them have been brainwashed by academia to the point that they don't even really know the true definition of capitalism, and have in mind this nonsense that money is evil, and free markets aren't fair.

Additionally, I am concerned with what happens when groups of like-minded people that do not understand reality get together in group-think designing what they believe to be the future utopia and epitome of human civilizations. They fail to realize their history, or how the real world works, rather they are more interested in talking about some sort of fantasyland, that someone else is going to pay for, and everyone is going to live happily ever after enjoying a heavenly existence. Okay so, let's talk and let me give you a case study and example here.

There was an interesting research paper put out by Deutsche Post DHL, a Futurist type Report on logistics titled; "The World in 2050," the press release appeared on February 27, 2012.
Anyway, the piece had an overview of 5-potential scenarios and in scenario one which is depicted as an; "Untamed Economy," with "Impending Collapse" the article stated;

"The world is characterized by unchecked materialism and mass consumption. This non-sustainable way of life is fed by the relentless exploitation of resources, a development that stokes climate change and causes natural disasters to mount. In a world characterized by tumultuous growth, demand for logistics and transport services climbs sharply. A global transportation supergrid ensures a rapid exchange of goods between centers of consumption. But as climate change advances, supply chains are increasingly disrupted, a development causing additional challenges for logistics companies."

Now then, I am not sure what type of fantasyland these folks are living in but I have some harsh and critical words for all this nonsense and global warming alarmism. You see, when I first heard about this report I was very excited in reading it, because I consider myself a Futurist in many regards, although I am not the type of Futurist who leans towards Plato utopian communistic theory. Further, to criticize consumption, is also to criticize capitalism, abundance, and all that the free-market can deliver.

It seems these utopians want to be free from want, and they want to make sure no one else can have what they want. That everyone should have only what they need to barely to survive, and nothing more, but that isn't what the human animal is about, nor does it take into consideration the innate characteristics of the species. We can't go around predicting the future without understanding the human animal. And we aren't going to be able to change the brain structure or the foundational genetics within to make people happy as minimalists by wishful thinking.

Now then, that's not saying we can't use genetic manipulation, drugs, pharmaceuticals, or future modification of the species to do it. But in that future aren't we really talking about turning human beings into a giant collective or Borg? Oh my gosh, 1984 here we come. As if all this nonsensical thinking wasn't enough, these futurist have to throw in the whole global warming religion issue, claiming there will be dystopia, or we can never reach our goals unless we do it their way, which happens to be destroying our energy infrastructure, changing the economic flows of civilization globally, changing the way we consume, the way we live, and submitting to the ultimate authority, namely their's.

It is interesting that the folks who were involved in this project, and this collaborative futurist work have played their hand, and now we see what they want to do, they want to control every aspect of our lives, tell us what we can and cannot have, hijack our energy infrastructure, and then promise us they will deliver what we need, which is what we will in the future agree to if we adopt their global warming religion. You only have to read between the lines just a little bit to see what's going on here, and it should scare you. If it doesn't scare you, I would submit to you that you are not paying attention.

In fact, most of the challenges we have in our economy, supply chain, and free-market system have to do with the same sorts of folks with their left leaning thinking trying to manipulate the flows of money, labor, production, and capital. It is obvious they want to do this well into the future, and if they aren't allowed to, they claim that we are all going to die because of global warming, that we will live some sort of a terrible existence. Well, I have news for you, all those folks who have promoted a utopian society in the past, trying to create something that will last for 1000 years - well, we've all seen what has happened, and mankind is not the better for their exploits, and exploratory projects with human civilization.

The reality is that when you look at the United States and the free-market system, and as we practice capitalism to our best ability, although we do fall down at times, we have created massive abundance, and it's worked quite well. This is the model we should follow, and anything to destroy this model is a threat to America's future. If those folks want to run their little game plan, and create their little communist nation state, or the folks in Belgium want to create a unified Europe, then let them go try, but as I look out around the world now, I see their projects have failed time and time again. And personally I don't think the United States should be bailing them out, or joining in cahoots with a nonsensical dream, or a new environmental religion.

It is obvious what works, and what hasn't worked. Capitalism has worked, socialism and communism haven't, and therefore we should all take notice and move forward into the future of humankind with that knowledge. We should not dismiss it, deny it, or trample on that truth. The problem with goody-two-shoed environmentalist futurism is that all their theories are flawed, and their foundation is baseless nonsense - it's all a house of cards, and if you fall for it, the Joker of dystopia wins. Please consider all this and think on it.

Swedish Set to Open State-of-the-Art Multiple Sclerosis Center ...

New Facility has been under development for several years and is largely funded through philanthropy

SEATTLE, April 6, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Swedish Neuroscience Institute (SNI) will open its new MS Center at Swedish to patients on April 9. Carefully designed for easy accessibility and to promote the well-being of people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), the new 11,700-square-foot center gives SNI the ability to consolidate all of its MS services into one facility. An additional 1,500-square-feet of outside therapy terrace will provide a safe environment for patients to work with a therapist on improving their gait over different terrain.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120406/DC83820)

The new center also enables scientists, researchers, physicians and patients to work collaboratively toward new treatment options for those diagnosed with MS. In a move that further establishes Swedish's neuroscience program as a leader in the region, the MS Center at Swedish is the most comprehensive facility of its kind on the West Coast and one of only a handful in the country.

The new center will give people with MS and their families easy access to a unique, multidisciplinary team of skilled neurologists and a specialized nursing staff to deliver the highest quality of coordinated care, new treatments and a variety of wellness options. The full team includes neurologists; neuro-ophthalmologists; physiatrists; social workers; a psychologist; a speech therapist; vocational, physical, occupational and cognitive rehabilitation therapists; as well as others who specialize in treating, educating and supporting people with MS. All of these caregivers are committed to a comprehensive approach to MS care that treats the whole person and addresses each patient's emotional, psychological, social and physical needs in a supportive environment.

The National MS Society's Northwest Chapter says more than 12,000 people in Washington state, Montana and Alaska have the disease. Approximately 9,500 of those cases are in Washington state, one of the highest incident rates in the country.

"The Pacific Northwest region has been disproportionately affected by MS, and researchers still don't know why," said Marc Mayberg, M.D., chief medical director of Swedish Neuroscience Institute. "We hope our targeted focus on MS helps provide answers for the many patients in our community who are battling this disease."

Currently, patients in the Pacific Northwest have to go to multiple locations to receive care. The new center will consolidate Swedish's existing treatments and research, as well as physical therapy and gym space filled with equipment designed for the needs of people with MS, including physical and rehabilitative therapy programs. The location and layout of the clinic is designed to provide people with MS easy access to the center.

The center will also offer yoga classes and access to social workers, vocational counselors, individual and family support groups, rehab therapists and many educational resources, all within a supportive environment.

"A center like this has been a dream for people with MS and the medical community for more than 15 years," said neurologist Jim Bowen, M.D., medical director of the new MS Center at Swedish. "This center is the result of a shared effort between Swedish and the patient community that has been pushing for this kind of resource."

Despite scientific research, physicians still do not know why MS disproportionately affects more people in the Northwest region than anywhere else in the country. While the past 20 years has seen great improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, MS remains a chronic, disabling, autoimmune disease which attacks the central nervous system and cannot be cured at this time. New treatments, however, can improve symptoms and quality of life for patients. Effective treatments can decrease pain, stiffness, tremor, fatigue and improve bladder/bowel functions. New medications can relieve symptoms and improve nervous-system functioning.

Swedish physicians are participating in more than 24 ongoing research studies. The new center will allow Swedish to grow their research and improve quality of life for people diagnosed with MS. The research support infrastructure in the new MS Center at Swedish will be significantly expanded.

"Our vision for the MS Center at Swedish is to help patients achieve their highest level of well-being," said Dr. Bowen. "The research studies we lead or participate in should help us do just that."

Working with global architecture and design firm Callison, the team utilized the tenets of evidence-based design and research on wellness and effects of the built environment. The clinic is designed through the evidence-based filters such as choice, social support, positive distraction, access to nature and lack of environmental stressors. Evaluating the common physical conditions that people with MS face, the physical environment is designed to incorporate specific finishes and design features that enable people with MS to engage the space more easily. For example, the center's Living Wall is a testament to this type of approach in design, insuring intuitive way finding as well as contributing to well-being and improved indoor air quality.

As a non-profit organization, Swedish is looking to the community to help build the $7.8 million facility. So far, the MS Center at Swedish has been largely funded with gifts from philanthropists. To date, Swedish Foundation has received more than $2.1 million toward the cost of the center. Nine families in the Seattle area contributed. That list includes Richard and Betty Hedreen and Jim and Gaye Pigott, who have collectively donated $1 million to the new center. Another set of donors made pledges of $100,000 or more. Proceeds from Celebrate Swedish, the medical center's fund-raising auction on May 12, will help close the gap for additional funds needed for the new center.

In 2004, Swedish established the Swedish Neuroscience Institute (SNI). Since its inception, more than 60 leading neurosurgeons, neurologists and other specialists have been recruited to build a world-class neuroscience program dedicated to the treatment and study of the full spectrum of neurological disorders, including MS.

For more information about the MS Center at Swedish or new SNI initiatives, visit www.swedish.org/neuroscience. To make a contribution, contact Kate Purcell in the Swedish Foundation at kate.purcell@swedish.org or 206-386-3194.
