When Supercars Die: The Last of the Moslers

Mosler

?

Boutique carmakers without the multi-billion dollar backing to produce sleds like this are frequently stopped dead in their tracks by government regulations. Take Mosler, for instance, the self-described?builder of?"hyperexotics" which was "pulled into the vortex of the financial downturn:" The RaptorGTR was supposed to be a range-topping Pagani/Ferrari/Lamborghini alternative, with a Veyron-slaying power to weight ratio of 649 horsepower per ton thanks to a twin-turbocharged 7 liter V8 producing 838 horsepower and a?carbon fiber safety cell yielding a 2,580 lb curb weight.?

?

The range-topping RaptorGTR was intended to carry on the Mosler line following the production of?50 MT900s/MT900GTR street cars and 24 MT900R race cars, but as fate would have, things didn't go as planned.?According to James Todd Wagner, president of Supercar Engineering, Inc. (which was to handle distribution of the car), an exemption for stability control regulations was submitted, but by the time the government asked for updated financial information to clear the ESC exemption and extension of Mosler's smart airbag exemption, it was too late: with virtually all of the staff laid off, there would be only one RaptorGTR produced, with a price tag of $700,000.

?

Is this a case of ultimate exclusivity or a sad sendoff for a small builder-- or both? Depends on your supercar perspective, I suppose...
